Asphalt Shingle Roofers for Gulf Coast Homes
Asphalt shingles cover most homes from Pearland to Galveston, and the difference between a shingle roof that lasts and one that blows off in the first big storm is almost never the brand on the bundle. It is the nail line, the starter course, the sealed edges and the attic air underneath, and that is where we spend our attention.

Which kind of asphalt shingle fits a Houston-area roof?
Three families of asphalt shingle cover nearly every house we look at. They differ in thickness, wind resistance and how well they shrug off hail. The right pick depends on your budget, how exposed the house is, what your HOA allows and whether your insurer gives a credit for impact resistance.
| Shingle | Build | Where it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Three-tab | One flat layer, cut into tabs | Rentals, sheds, budget re-roofs where it is still sold |
| Architectural (laminated) | Two or more laminated layers, heavier | Most homes; the standard choice for re-roofs today |
| Impact-rated (Class 4) | Architectural build with a reinforced or rubberized mat | Hail-exposed homes; may earn an insurance credit |
Our guide to impact-resistant shingles explains the Class 4 rating and how Texas insurers treat it.
What separates a well-installed shingle roof from a poor one?
Mostly details you cannot see from the street once the job is done. A shingle roof is a system, and the maker's installation instructions describe each part. Skipping one is how a roof loses shingles in a summer squall while the house next door keeps all of its own.
- The nail line. Each nail goes in the narrow fastening zone, flush, straight, with the count the wind rating calls for.
- Starter strips. A purpose-made starter course at every eave and rake, sealant at the edge.
- Drip edge. Metal edge at eaves and rakes, lapped correctly with the underlayment.
- Valleys. Membrane underneath, then a closed-cut or metal valley, never shingles bridged loosely across.
- Flashing. New step flashing at each course along a wall, new boots on every pipe.
- Exposure and offset. Each course set at the specified exposure, joints offset so water never lines up with a gap.
On the coast, wind decides how long a shingle roof lasts. Most of our service area sits in the Texas windstorm zones mapped by TDI, and homes covered through TWIA need the roof inspected to keep that coverage. Installing to the shingle maker's high-wind nailing pattern is part of every coastal estimate we write.
What goes under a new shingle roof?
The layers below the shingles are what keep water out when a shingle does lift or crack.
Synthetic underlayment across the entire deck, lapped uphill
Self-adhered membrane in valleys and around chimneys, skylights and pipes
Starter strips with the sealant at the edge, eaves and rakes
Ridge vent or box vents balanced against the soffit intake
New pipe boots, step flashing and counter-flashing, none reused
Decking walked and soft sheets replaced before any of it goes down
Why does attic ventilation matter for shingles?
Heat trapped in the attic cooks shingles from below while the sun bakes them from above. A roof with almost no ridge exhaust, or with soffit vents painted shut or blocked by insulation, can run noticeably hotter than one that breathes, and the shingles dry out and curl sooner. Attic heat also pushes moisture into the decking in humid weather.
So every shingle estimate includes a ventilation check: how much intake at the eaves, how much exhaust at the ridge or roof vents, and whether the two are in balance. Mixing exhaust types on one roof, such as a ridge vent next to a power fan, can short-circuit the airflow, and we write down the fix. Our article on how long a roof lasts in Texas heat goes deeper.
Getting a shingle roof estimate
We measure the roof, count the layers to be torn off and check the decking from the attic, then price the shingle line you choose against the alternatives. The roof replacement page covers the full tear-off process, and the cost guide explains what moves the number. We re-roof shingle homes across the area, from Friendswood to Texas City.
Shingle roofing questions
What is the difference between three-tab and architectural shingles?
Three-tab shingles are a single flat layer cut into three tabs, so the roof looks uniform and thin. Architectural shingles are two or more layers laminated together, which makes them heavier, gives the roof a dimensional look and generally earns a higher wind rating. Most re-roofs around Houston today use architectural shingles, and many makers have stopped offering three-tab in some colors.
Why does the nail placement matter so much?
Each shingle is designed to be fastened in a narrow band where it overlaps the shingle below, so a single nail catches both layers. Nails set too high miss the lower shingle and let wind peel the roof back; nails driven at an angle or overdriven tear the mat. Correct placement, with the right count per shingle, is what the maker's wind rating assumes.
Do shingles need a special starter row?
Yes. The first course at the eaves and along the rakes is a dedicated starter strip with a factory sealant line positioned right at the edge. It bonds the bottom of the first full shingle so wind cannot get a grip there. Cutting the tabs off regular shingles and flipping them, which some crews still do, puts the sealant in the wrong place.
How long until new shingles seal down?
The sealant strips on asphalt shingles activate with heat from the sun. In a Houston summer that happens within days. In a cool, cloudy stretch it can take longer, and until the strips bond the shingles depend on their nails alone, which is one more reason nail placement matters on a roof installed in winter.
Can I put shingles on a low-slope roof?
Only down to a point. Standard asphalt shingles need enough pitch to shed water quickly, and below that the manufacturers require extra underlayment or a different roof system entirely. A porch or patio roof that is close to flat usually gets a membrane rather than shingles, which we specify on the estimate.
Are darker shingles a bad idea in Texas heat?
They run hotter on the surface, which can shorten their life a little and warm the attic, especially when ventilation is poor. Lighter colors and shingles with reflective granules stay cooler. The bigger factor is attic airflow, so whatever color you pick, we check the soffit and ridge vents as part of the job.
Get the new roof planned before the old one comes off
We measure every slope, check the decking and the attic ventilation, and write the estimate before a single shingle is torn off.
Ready to find out what a new roof will take?
The roof measurement is free. We check the decking, count the layers, measure every slope and write the material, underlayment and flashing line by line.
